CUTTING BOARDS

Want to impress your dinner guests? Set up a pretty, exotic-wood cutting board with cheese and crackers, a nice bottle of wine, and one of Tom’s exotic-wood bottle stoppers! The cutting boards shown here are just an example of the many Tom has made. Each is unique. Each is made from exotic hardwoods. No stains are involved in achieving these beautiful colors. Each is finished with Walnut oil – a food-safe finish.

Cutting boards can be made in a couple of different ways:  facegrain, where the grain runs from one end to the other, and endgrain, where the grain runs from one side of the cutting board to the other. Endgrain is much harder than facegrain, and thus more resistant to damaged caused when cutting on them using sharp knives. The effort required to make an endgrain board is over twice that to make a facegrain cutting board, which explains why the cost is higher. Both types are beautiful, both are durable.

Wooden cutting boards are best for cutting cheese, fruit, and vegetables. Cutting meat on them will cause blood and juices to soak into the wood, which cannot easily be disinfected. Some fruit, such as plums, berries (such as blueberries and strawberries), and even vegetables such as carrots, may stain the wood, and ruin the finish. If you choose to use one of these cutting boards for such purposes, always cut on the same side, and keep the other side pristine for display.
