ONE PIECE BOWLS
One Piece bowls, as the name implies, are bowls made from a single piece of wood. Often, this wood is harvested from trees that someone cut down or that were knocked down in a storm. It’s not uncommon to find wood like this lying on the side of the road. This is the best kind of wood because: it’s free, and using it to make art is saving it from rotting or becoming firewood. However, this type of wood takes a very long time (typically many years) before it has dried sufficiently to make a finished bowl. Bowls made before the wood has dried will warp, crack, or both. But once the wood has dried, the results, are well, simply beautiful.
Other bowls are made from blocks of wood that have been kiln dried. This is often the case for bowls made from exotic woods. Exotic woods are beautiful, but expensive. However, such wood is very stable, and can be made into a bowl with little risk of warping or cracking.
In both cases, once the wood has been turned and sanded, a food-safe finish is applied, producing a beautiful luster that should last a lifetime!
